About Jack Lowden
Following his graduation from the Scottish Royal Academy of Music and Drama, Jack Lowden caught the industry’s attention with scene stealing turns in projects spanning theatre, television, and film.
This year Jack received a BAFTA TV nomination after reprising his role of ‘River Cartwright’ opposite Gary Oldman in the second series of Slow Horses on Apple TV+, which has since returned for a third series, with a fourth set to follow. He also lead the BBC and Paramount+ drama series The Gold, directed by Oscar winner Aneil Karia (The Long Goodbye).
It was recently announced that his upcoming project, The Outrun, will be part of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival lineup. Jack produced the film under his production banner, Arcade Pictures. The film stars Saoirse Ronan, Paapa Essiedu and Stephen Dillane, and will be directed by Nora Fingscheidt (The Unforgivable). Jack will also star in the new John Maclean survival thriller Tornado, as announced out of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
In 2022, Jack was seen as the decorated WW1 poet ‘Siegfried Sassoon’ in writer-director Terence Davies’ biopic Benediction, for which he won his second Scottish BAFTA. He was also the recipient of the Trophée Chopard award at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 2021, Jack produced Kindred and also starred in the film alongside Fiona Shaw, reuniting with Tamara Lawrance. The previous year saw Jack in Steve McQueen’s BBC One/Amazon drama Small Axe, which garnered him a Scottish BAFTA nomination. Following this, he reunited with Tom Hardy in Josh Trank’s Capone.
In early 2019, Jack was seen in comedy-drama Fighting With My Family, earning him an EE BAFTA Rising Star Award nomination. The film was directed by Stephen Merchant and starred Dwayne Johnson, Vince Vaughn, and Florence Pugh.
The end of 2018 saw Jack star in the BBC’s adaptation of Andre Levy’s bestselling novel The Long Song, with Sir Lenny Henry and Tamara Lawrance. Working Title and Focus Features’ Mary Queen Of Scots followed. Directed by Josie Rourke, Jack starred as male lead ‘Lord Darnley’ alongside Margot Robbie’s ‘Queen Elizabeth I’ and Saoirse Ronan’s ‘Mary Queen of Scots’. In the same year, Jack returned to the stage with Hayley Atwell to star in Josie Rourke’s Measure For Measure at the Donmar Warehouse. He also won his first Scottish BAFTA for his role as ‘Vaughn’ in the Netflix thriller Calibre. The film went on to win two awards at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
2017 saw Jack as a fighter pilot in Christopher Nolan’s epic World War II action-adventure Dunkirk, alongside Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy. He also took the lead in the Morrissey biopic England Is Mine with Jessica Brown Findlay. Prior to that, he starred in Tommy’s Honour with Peter Mullan.
In early 2016, Jack was seen in Andrew Davies' ambitious adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's literary masterpiece War & Peace, starring alongside Paul Dano, Lily James, and James Norton. The six-episode series was directed by Tom Harper.
In November 2014, Jack starred as ‘Michael’ opposite Paddy Gibson in the BBC’s The Passing Bells, a powerful five-part drama for BBC One. In October of the same year, Jack starred as ‘Thommo’ in Yann Demange’s ’71 opposite Jack O’Connell.
2014 was made particularly memorable when Jack garnered industry attention in Richard Eyre's revival of Ibsen's 1881 drama Ghosts. Jack won the Laurence Olivier Award for ‘Best Actor in a Supporting Role’ and the Ian Charleson Award the same year. Jack also took the role of ‘Orestes’ in Electra at The Old Vic, starring Kristin Scott Thomas as ‘Electra’ and Diana Quick as Jack’s mother. Jack’s breakthrough was in The National Theatre of Scotland’s production of Black Watch. He also took on the role of Scottish runner and missionary ‘Eric Liddell’, opposite James McArdle’s ‘Harold Abrahams’, in the stage adaptation of Chariots of Fire.
