Raised in South London but now Edinburgh based, Garen Abel Unokan’s directorial credits include Can I Touch Your Hair? by Lekhani Chirwa (Vault Festival, 2019), Glutathione by Winsome Pinnock (Replay: Young Vic, 2019), and Blend.Share.Mix by Roli Okorodudu (Rapid Write Response at Theatre503, 2019).

Her assisting credits include Jacaranda by Lorna French and directed by Elle While (a Pentabus and Theatre By The Lake co-production, 2021) and An Unfinished Man by Dipo Baruwa-Etti and directed by Taio Lawson (The Yard, 2022).

Garen’s writing has appeared in publications such as The New Yorker and Black Ballad, and she is currently working on her first novel. As an artist, Garen is particularly interested in narratives surrounding queerness, blackness, coming of age, and autonomy.
