St Thomas Aquinas Secondary School

17 - 18 Mar 2023 | Glasgow

Overview

Moving through the familiar ground of the Scottish school from the assembly hall to the playground, the classrooms to the gym, Like Flying was an interactive performance that took place in schools throughout Scotland from 2019-2023 including Auchinleck Academy East Ayrshire, Craigmount High School Edinburgh, Bellahouston Academy Glasgow, Ardrossan Academy North Ayrshire, St Thomas Aquinas Glasgow and Rossie School, Angus.

Created in response to the growing levels of anxiety found in teenagers across Scotland, this project invited a cast of 13-15 year olds to, through aerial performance methods, learn to fly.

Led by Nic Green, with movement direction from All or Nothing Aerial Dance Theatre, Like Flying took the form of a promenade performance through the school corridors and multiple spaces both indoors and out. It wove through a surreal and dream-like curriculum, as young people educated adults in this mirror-image world where roles were reversed, power was flipped, and authority was inverted.

The connection and trust was the main thing that struck me.

I cried and the Headteacher cried and we were just blown away by it. To see the young people do what they were doing was just brilliant.

I'm excited to see what I can do that I didn’t know I could do.

We had each other to remind us that we weren’t doing it alone - you were always with someone so never felt alone.
