The National Theatre of Scotland film Adamwill receive a special screening and as part of Refugee Festival Scotland, followed by a talk with Adam Kashmiry and director, Cora Bissett. The screening will take place at Glasgow Film Theatre on Sunday 19th June 2022 at 7:40pm, with tickets available on a Pay What You Can sliding scale.

The on-screen version ofAdam will subsequently be streamed on the National Theatre of Scotland’s website, available on a Pay What You Wish sliding scale from Monday 20 – Monday 27 June 2022. Both events mark Refugee Week, held every year across the UK around World Refugee Day on the 20 June. The film will also be made freely available to Scottish schools via the Company’s education portal.

Adamis the screen adaptation of the acclaimed multi-award-winning stage play inspired by the life of Adam Kashmiry.

Adam tells the remarkable story of a young trans man and his struggle across genders and borders to be himself. Originally a multi-award-winning stage play, Adam has been reinvented as a compelling, theatrical on-screen drama, presented by the National Theatre of Scotland and Hopscotch Films. Adam Kashmiry performs, as himself, in the leading role.

The film premiered on BBC Scotland on 06 March 2021 and was broadcast as part of BBC Arts ‘Lights Up’ for New Culture in Quarantine Season on BBC iPlayer and BBC Four on 20 April 2021. Since then, Adam has been screened at various international film festivals and presentations

Adamwon a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Scripted TV and the Audience Award for Best Film at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival 2021.

The on-screen version is brought to life by directors Louise Lockwood and Cora Bissett, as well as the stage production leading actor, Adam Kashmiry whose life story is at the heart of the drama.

Adam is joined on screen by Myriam Acharki, Yasmin Al-Khudhairi, Haqi Ali, Neshla Caplan, Stephen McCole, Rehanna MacDonald and Hamish Wyllie.

The creative team includes director of photography Carlo D'Alessandro, designer Emily James, lighting designer Lizzie Powell and composer Jocelyn Pook.

The screen drama features a virtual online trans world choir, brought together for the original award-winning stage production. They appear together on-screen singing Jocelyn Pook’s epic choral original score.

Adam first premiered in a National Theatre of Scotland production at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre in 2017 as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The on-screen adaptation is produced by the National Theatre of Scotland and Hopscotch Films and commissioned by BBC Scotland and BBC Arts.
