Adam, the screen adaptation of the 2017 National Theatre of Scotland multi award-winning stage play inspired by the life of Adam Kashmiry, will be shown on Sydney Opera House’s platform Stream, as part of its UK/AU digital season from 7 December 2021 to 7 March 2022.

Adam tells the remarkable story of a young trans man and his struggle across genders and borders to be himself. Originally a stage play, Adam has been reinvented as a compelling, theatrical on-screen drama, produced by the National Theatre of Scotland and Hopscotch Films. Adam Kashmiry performs, as himself, in the leading role. Written by playwright and dramaturg Frances Poet the on-screen version is brought to life by directors Louise Lockwood and Cora Bissett.

The is the first Australasian digital presentation of Adam following successful screenings in North America. Since its release Adam has been screened at Vancouver Queer Film Festival 2021, Out South Queer Film Festival (online), Seattle Queen Film Festival 2021 and was the centrepiece film of PrideFlix Virtual Pride Film Festival 2021 presented by qFLIX, Philadelphia. The film has also been selected to be screened at the LA Queer FilmFest in 2022.

Adam’s award-winning stage production success has continued with awards for the screen version. The film recently won the BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Scripted TV 2021 and the Audience Award for Best Film at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival 2021.

The on-screen adaptation was commissioned by BBC Scotland and BBC Arts. It premiered on BBC Scotland on 06 March 2021 and was broadcast as part of BBC Arts ‘Lights Up’ for New Culture in Quarantine Season on BBC iPlayer and BBC Four on 20 April 2021. The film is currently available to view on BBC iPlayer.
